The Halva product is the first candy that the founders of Halva, brothers Jean Karavokyros and Michael Karavokyros started making in a former milk shop located in Kruunuhaka with the help of an investing partner. The recipe for the Halva product originates from Greece and is a family recipe which they got to take with them when the brothers left the country and its financial hardships. The brothers later on further refined the recipe to make different Halva products from it. These products were a success and in a few years the brothers were able to buy out the investing partner. As a result the brothers founded their own company, Oy Itämainen Halvatehdas Ab - and this is where the story of the company as a producer of confectionery commenced.
The Halva product is made of sesame paste and tahini. The first product was a vanilla flavoured Halva, and later on the selection grew to include the vanilla and chocolate flavoured Halva Roulet. The Halva product is delicious on its own, but it can also be used in baking. You can find the Halva products in the supermarket cold aisle, close to dairy and ready made baking products. Even to this day, the sweet is made by hand in a big copper pan at the factory in Pitäjänmäki, Helsinki.
We want to create delightful and memorable taste experiences as well as produce high quality and the best liquorice in the world for every consumer. The Halva products are vegan, lactose free, dairy free, soya free as well as nut and egg free.
